The Greenfield Campus Bike Scheme
A Last September, Greenfield University started a bike-sharing scheme with 120 bikes at eight stations around the campus. Students unlock a bike with their student card. The first 30 minutes of each ride are free; after that, each extra 15 minutes costs 5 TL.
B The idea came from the student union. In a survey, many students said that the buses between the main campus and the dormitories were often full in the morning, and some students were late for their first classes. The union suggested bikes as a cheap and healthy alternative, and the university agreed to pay for the first year.
C Not everything went smoothly at first. In the first month, several bikes were left outside the stations, and some were damaged. The university responded by adding a small fine for bikes that are not returned to a station and by opening a repair point next to the library, where students can also borrow tools to fix their own bicycles.
D The results so far are encouraging. Around 2,000 students used the bikes at least once in the first term, and the morning buses are less crowded. The university now plans to add four more stations next year, including one at the sports centre. However, it says the scheme will only continue if students keep looking after the bikes.

Why Do We Forget Names?
Most people have had the embarrassing experience of meeting someone, hearing their name, and forgetting it a few seconds later. [ 7 ] One reason is that names are arbitrary: there is usually nothing about a person's face that tells you they are called Daniel rather than Mark. In contrast, information such as someone's job is easier to remember because it connects to things we already know. [ 8 ] Psychologists sometimes call this the "Baker–baker paradox", after experiments in which people were more likely to remember that a man was a baker than that his surname was Baker.
Another problem is attention. When we are introduced to someone, we are often busy thinking about what to say next or how we look. [ 9 ] Fortunately, simple strategies can help, such as repeating the name aloud during the conversation or linking it to a memorable image.
- As a result, the name is never properly stored in memory in the first place.
- Surprisingly, this happens even to people who have an excellent memory for other kinds of information.
- A baker, for instance, brings to mind images of bread, early mornings and flour-covered hands.
- For this reason, most people find it easier to remember places than faces.

Student: Hi. I'd like to borrow this book, but the system says I can't.
Librarian: Let me check. Ah, I see. You already have five books out, and that's the maximum for undergraduate students.
Student: Oh, I didn't know there was a limit. I thought it was ten.
Librarian: Ten is for postgraduate students. But you could return one of the others, or I can reserve this one for you for two days.
Student: Two days is fine. I'll bring back the statistics book tomorrow morning. It's due on Friday anyway.
Librarian: Great. And just so you know, from next week we're open until midnight during the exam period, instead of ten o'clock.
Student: That's really useful. Thanks a lot.
